Description - #1 Kaimu Bay: Black sand beach with an active volcano!

More about Kaimu and the immediate area.

Tile floors, cherry cabinets and granite countertops make our Kaimu home a visual pleasure.

If you walk across the street onto the 1991 lava flow, you may see lava coming from Pu'u O'o vent some 5 miles to the west. Currently a steam plume is seen at the lava’s ocean entry.

The beach at Kaimu is a ten-minute walk across the 1991 lava flow and has been planted with coconuts by local families. This beach is spectacular but nearly always too rough for swimming. Walk the coast about 40 minutes and you come to a second beach where the Hawaiian Monk Seal will sometimes haul out to rest. On a good day you may see turtle, dolphin, whale or the I'o (Hawaiian Hawk). You may want to stop at our little local restaurant on your walk back to enjoy some local grinds (great papaya smoothie). A five-minute drive up the road from Kaimu is Kehena. Here a trail leads to a beach where people swim with dolphins. Nude sunbathing is not legal in Hawaii County. The law is not enforced here and those who frequent this beach have declared it clothing optional.

A short drive further is Ahalanui County Park. Here a large pond connects to the ocean. The water is always calm and warm (volcano heating) regardless of ocean conditions. Great for children as well as sore and tired bodies!

Continuing along the coast road you come to Pohoiki with numerous surf breaks. Warm ponds are close by and also a natural sauna. In Pahoa there is a county pool open to the public.

Badminton, croquet, and a rock barbeque are provided at Kaimu. There is an outdoor rock wall shower where we cool off after the beach. We have a small Home Depot pool which children love. Adults can fill the pool directly from the hot water heater for an evening soak under the stars.

Beds: Upstairs-2 bedrooms with queen beds Downstairs-2 queens in one room.

The living room has a queen sofa/sleeper.

The home is across the street from the 1991 lava flow with the ocean roughly 100 yards away. The ocean used to be right across the street. Depending on conditions you usually hear the surf, especially at night. The coqui frog, a native of Puerto Rico, serenades the nighttime hours.

Groceries: Safeway in Hilo on Highway 11 just past Wal-Mart is a good place to stop on your way to Kaimu. Malama Market in Pahoa has a good variety of groceries and is only 10 minutes away.

Area Description: Trade winds blow from the northeast to the southwest. All the Hawaiian Islands are lush and green with more rain on the windward (for the Big Island, Hilo) side while the leeward (Kona) side is more barren, dry desert. Micro-climates abound. Kaimu sits below the rain shadow of the volcano's southeast rift zone. Typical weather is sunny with early morning and nighttime showers. In 30 years I have only stayed at Kaimu one time where rain limited outdoor activity over a period of days. If a large weather system moves in, the entire island can be drenched. If you get "Kona weather", where the winds blow from the southwest, the weather pattern reverses and Kona rains while Hilo shines. However, the volcano is the biggest weather factor. Trades push the "vog" (smoke, haze, fumes) to the Kona side. This usually gives Kona beautiful sunsets and poor visibility. Individuals with respiratory problems (asthma, emphysema, allerg ...
