The beaches are among the most varied and beautiful in Europe thanks to its 3500 kilometres of coastline, which are broken up into creeks, inlets, and bays.
Our remote corner of Brittany, the Finistère (meaning the End of the Earth) juts into the Atlantic Ocean at the Westernmost tip of Brittany, France and Continental Europe. Its beauty derives in part from its spectacular ocean-fronting cliffs and headlands.
Boating and all things maritime flourish here with an annual tall boat regatta between Douarnenez and Brest as well as many other regattas and festivals. Water sports flourish particularly in the summer months, sailing, wind-surfing and world-class surfing.
Local Cuisine and Seafood
Oysters, mussels and other ‘fruits de mer’ dominate the Breton cuisine, but simple dishes made with superb ingredients are the spirit of the local gastronomy. Breton butter, often salted with sea salt, is used on and in everything. The area is also famous for its galettes (savoury buckwheat pancakes) crèpes (sweet wheat flour pancakes) cider, mead and beer. Basically, fresh and well-cared for seafood, milk, apples and wheat are the root of Brittany’s recipes and dishes.
Historic and Picturesque Villages and Towns
Medieval towns and cities pepper the countryside. The exquisite medieval city of Quimper, the capital of the ancient kingdom of Cornouaille, with its renowned cathedral is a 30 minute drive away. Benodet and Pont-Aven nicknamed "City of Painters", both popular holiday destinations, are only a short drive away. Locronan, one of the most beautiful villages in France (featured in many films, including Roman Polanski's Tess) is also just a stone's throw away.
Celtic Heritage
This is France’s ancient Celtic region. The Bretons continue to celebrate their music and culture, with numerous festivals throughout the summer months. The area is littered with mysterious ancient Celtic standing stones; dolmen and menhirs. Carnac is only a short drive but there are many impressive dolmens right here, overlooking the ocean. This land also gave rise to the legends of King Arthur, Merlin and the great mystical forest of Brocéliande.
