The Cabin – what’s it like?
Eriskay is a solid-log lodge built of interlocking Norwegian pine. This slow grown timber provides dense wood that has superb insulating properties: our log cabin is cool and airy in summer whilst warm and cozy in winter.
Lounge/Diner
From the south-facing porch, the door leads into a large lounge/diner. This has a large picture window to the front that looks out over the loch and mountains, and a window to the rear.
Two large comfy sofas are perfect for either looking out at the fantastic views, or having a well-deserved snooze. There is a fireplace with electric fire, a television (with freeview satellite reception) and video. There is also a bookcase with a range of books for dipping in to.
The dining table comfortably seats six people, positioned just off the walk-in kitchen.
Kitchen
We’ve tried to make sure that the kitchen has all you need to comfortably self-cater: a two-oven cooker, microwave, fridge-freezer, lots of pots, pans and utensils, as well as a full range of crockery and glassware. The washing machine is also situated in the kitchen.
From the lounge, a hall leads to all the other rooms in the cabin.
Bedrooms
First left is the smallest bedroom, which has a pine bunk bed, a dressing table and wardrobe. The window looks out of the front of the cabin with views down over the loch.
Second on the left is the double bedroom, with a pine double bed, dressing table and wardrobe. This room too looks out from the front over the loch and mountains.
At the end of the hall is the twin bedroom, which has views to the side of the cabin, looking through pine and larch trees down the loch. There are wooden white-painted twin beds, which can be pushed together if required. Again, there is a dressing table and wardrobe.
All bedrooms have their own electric heater. The beds will be made up for your arrival, and have feather duvets, and two pillows each - one feather, one man-made.
Bathroom
Off the hall to the right is the bathroom. There is a full sized bath, with electric shower over, as well as basin, toilet and a heated towel rail.
A collapsible travel cot and toddler high chair are stored at the log cabin for your convenience.
Grounds
Eriskay stands in about half and acre of its own grounds. It is one of 14 similar log cabins that are spread over a 12 acre site, known as Seaview Grazings. It is not a holiday park – a private estate would be a better description as the cabins sit in their own distinct plots and do not overlook one another. Six of the cabins are let by a holiday company – Seaview Grazings Limited. The others are in private ownership, some of which are available through letting companies.
To the front of the cabin is a level area for parking with ample space for four cars. There is a picnic table with even finer views down the loch and over Strontian Bay.
To the rear of the property we have cleared a mass of brambles and felled trees. In the spring, a carpet of bluebells can be seen, followed by bracken in the summer. We are selectively allowing some specimen trees to grow.
The bird table outside the back window of the lounge is always alive with birds, particularly in spring. There are also regular visits pine-martens (who love hens eggs) and throughout much of 2007 a wildcat has been spotted loping around. The smaller birds also need to be on the lookout – sparrow hawks regularly fly through and we have witnessed birds ‘taken on the wing’ from our vantage point inside the cabin.
The weekly price of Eriskay is all-inclusive: there are no hidden extras. Linen is provided, electricity is included in the cost, we have an agent ‘on site’ who can assist if anything stops working. All we ask is that you treat the cabin as if it were your own.
