Area Description: Waikanae (pronounced Wy-kan-i) is a Maori word which means "glistening water" here referring to the Tasman Sea. Helen's Bed & Breakfast / Homestay is situated on the west coast of the Wellington/Kapiti/Horowhenua region in the lower part of the North Island of New Zealand. It is a seaside location approx. 60 kms or 1 hour's drive from Wellington City (SH1) with a population of approx. 15,000. Waikanae is a popular place for retirees as well as for weekenders and holiday makers. It boasts a long and wide beach, great for walking, and wonderful for birdwatching especially around the Waikanae River Estuary and lagoons. Waikanae is a very "arty" region with many galleries to explore. Enjoy direct access to the beach from Helen's, walking distance to restaurants with a very good choice of more restaurants/cafes in the Waikanae Township approx 5-1/2 kms from Helen's. Paraparaumu is next town south with Otaki being next town north.

Helen's B&B is a two-storey, open-plan house with direct access to the beach. Please note there are stairs to negotiate. As it is Helen's home, she is always onsite and enjoys giving hospitality to whoever is sharing her home with her. Waikanae has a small shopping precinct as well as an art gallery (Mahara Gallery), boutique cinemas, a library, bakeries, photoshop, supermarkets etc. There are 3 cafes/restaurants within walking distance of Helen's B&B and of a very good standard. Visits to Kapiti Island, a protected nature reserve, are recommended but please note that a permit is required and is dependent on the weather conditions on the day as to whether or not the visit will take place. There are several nature sites within the Kapiti region worth exploring.
