I have stayed in this apartment several times. It is a little jewel - it has been beautifully renovated and furnished and retains its original character, being situated in one of the medieval streets that lead directly off the central piazza. I have stayed with my daughter and my grandson, or with a friend. I have also stayed on my own, and can recommend it to a woman travelling on her own - it feels completely safe: The shops, bars and restaurants are a stone’s throw away - the apartment is only a few metres from the piazza. Local people are very helpful and there are some great food shops - a delicatessen, a grocery shop selling fruit and vegetables , a bakery that has fresh bread each morning. Also a covered market every morning and an open market once a week. Pietrasanta is known for its sculpture, with exhibitions in the piazza and galleries each summer, featuring international artists. The sculpture college also has an open day. What I like most about Pietrasanta is that it isn’t just dependent on tourism - the area around has its own manufacturing traditions based mainly on the marble trade, so you feel you are in a ‘real place’! The cathedral is in the centre of the main piazza and from time to time they hold classical concerts open to the public free of charge. I have also been to a performance of choirs from around the regions. The sound of the music in the vast space of the cathedral is memorable. Other events take place in the main piazza and along some of the adjacent streets, for example antiques fairs, local celebrations. The many small art studios, and boutique clothes and shoe shops open during the day and again at night. A small cinema is housed in the old Teatro building. It is so easy to get back from these events to the apartment. The centre of the old town is very contained, and yet nearby there is a train station and bus station. It is easy to get to a range of places on local transport, which is very cheap - up into the hills on the local bus or into the mountains via Seravezza; to the Carrara marble mountains via train and bus, or by car. There is a bus to the beach, which isfour kilometres away, but when my grandson is with us we go via a cycle path through a pine wood. Other places to visit: Viareggio, with its harbour, Art Nouveau facades, the Modern Art Gallery; the Puccini Festival with opera in the outdoor theatre on the Lake; Forte dei Marmi, with designer shops, the original fort, now an art gallery, a funfair, and pony and trap rides for children; Lucca, Montecatini, Florence by train, or car …… After a day’s outing, I always enjoy getting back into the historic centre of Pietrasanta and the apartment.
