Area Description: Loiza is a town located 12-15 miles away from San Juan. You can go there by several routes, the scenic Rd 187 along the coastline, the old Rd 3 and the new tollway Hwy 66. It is also close to Rio Grande where you can enjoy its beautiful golf courses and El Yunque Rain Forest. Loiza is a town with rich cultural traditions. St Patrick Church (1645) in Loiza is the oldest on the island still active as a parish church. Loiza is the best place to sample the Puerto Rican variety of Afro-Caribbean cuisine. The Loiza Carnival celebrates the African heritage of the town of Lo?za. This annual folk (last week of July) festival features a religious ceremony, carnival, parade, floats, costumes, masks and bomba dancers. A lively Afro-Caribbean dance, bomba is at the root of the Puerto Rico's African heritage.
